Seychelles Protecting the Ocean with Leonardo DiCaprio

In what has been described as a landmark agreement, the Seychelles has committed to protecting large areas of the Indian Ocean to help clear USD21 million of its national debt.

The money comes through investors, including Hollywood actor Leonardo DiCaprio’s foundation donating USD1 million.

The island nation has agreed to preserve 210,000 km2 of ocean – covering nearly the size of Great Britain – so that two huge marine parks will cover 15 percent of ocean surrounding Seychelles.

Additionally, the agreement restricts tourism and fishing activities to prevent damage to aquatic life.

Sherin Francis, CEO, Seychelles Tourism Board, commented, “We need to be responsible as we sustainably develop our oceans. By safeguarding our environment, we can also ensure that we are protecting our people against an uncertain future.”
