GBTA: US Project-Based Business Travel Spend Topped USD45 Billion

In 2017, project-based business travel spending reached USD45.4 billion, comprising 15 percent of all US business travel spending, according to a Global Business Travel Association (GBTA) study, in partnership with InterContinental Hotels Group.

In total, 66 million trips were taken in 2017 for project-based purposes, representing 12 percent of all US business trips and 19 percent of all US business trips taken for transient purposes.

“Demand for project-based business travel will continue to rise with top project-intense sectors forecasted to grow faster than the broader economy in the coming years,” said Michael W. McCormick, executive director, GBTA.

The average spend per business trip was significantly higher for trips for project-based purposes (USD679) than for other business trips (USD533) over the same period, driven by longer average stays and higher trip budgets.
