In January, global passenger demand grew 9.6 percent year-on-year in terms of revenue passenger kilometres (RPK), as shown in data released by International Air Transport Association, marking the strongest increase in more than five years.

Bolstered by a rise in travel associated with Lunar New Year celebrations, capacity soared eight percent in the month under review, while load factor jumped 1.2 percentage points to 80.2 percent. In particular, the Middle East saw the strongest regional growth in RPK, up 14.4 compared to the same period in 2016, while capacity climbed 11.4 percent and load factor rose for the third consecutive month to 79.8 percent, up 2.1 percentage points.
