Santiago shares an overall city GDP of 3.2 percent, as the city relies heavily on other industries too. Travel and tourism GDP in Santiago has seen 7.5 percent growth over the past decade and the trend is set to continue with a growth rate of 7.1 percent.
Santiago's tourism share of spending rose from 21 percent in 2006 to 24 percent in 2016. The sector will exceptionally benefit once the city opens a new international airport terminal in 2020. Looking beyond the capital, the total contribution of Chile's travel and tourism to GDP was USD24.9 billion, 10.1 percent of GDP in 2016.
