Costa Cruises to Halve Food Waste

Costa Cruises has unveiled 4GOODFOOD, a programme aiming to halve food waste on board its ships by 2020.

According to the Italian company, some 54 million meals a year are prepared on board the Costa fleet, encouraging it to review current food service processes and remodel them using an integrated approach based on sustainability and ensuring proactive guest and crew engagement.

The pilot project was tested on the flagship Costa Diadema in 2016 and 4GOODFOOD is now being implemented fleet-wide after the test programme yielded impressive results with more than a 50 percent reduction in food waste in 11 months - equivalent to a saving of 1,189 metric tons of CO2, or the emissions of 231 motor vehicles in a year.
