RIU Hotels Install 100 Classrooms Following Mexico Earthquake

Six months after a devastating earthquake shook Mexico on September 19, RIU Hotels & Resorts, with a contribution to United Nations International Children's Fund (UNICEF), has installed 100 temporary classrooms and facilitated the return to school activities to more than 4,000 Mexican children based within the states of Chiapas and Puebla.

RIU Hotels decided to donate USD400,000 to UNICEF for the installation of the classrooms, as well as to provide furniture and supplies needed by the students and teachers, within a kit called, School in a Box, of which 100 were distributed.

The most important part is that the children have been able to resume their education immediately, in good conditions and with guarantees of safety and hygiene.

In addition, this collaboration has provided direct training in psychosocial support to 204 teachers, who have been able to help children cope with the psychological after-effects of the tragedy.

Following the replication scheme designed by UNICEF with Chiapas and Puebla, the training programme has presently reached more than 1,020 teachers.
