Tourism Research Australia’s International Visitor Survey confirmed Tasmania’s status as the country’s fastest growing tourism destination with a 16 percent increase in international visitors to a record breaking 250,300 arrivals in the 12 months to March, the highest growth rate of all territories and above the nationwide average of nine percent.

During the period under review, the island state also recorded a 21 percent increase in tourism spending to AUD424 million (USD322.5 million), while visitor nights soared nine percent to 3.62 million.

China demonstrated the strongest growth, up 35 percent, followed by the UK, the US and Hong Kong.

The positive figures have been attributed to the government’s achievements in supporting the sector through AUD18 million (USD13.69 million) of marketing.
