March Passenger Volume Rise at HKIA

Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) recorded strong passenger volume growth during March this year, handling 6.39 million passengers with a year-on-year surge of 8.5 percent.

Flight movements increased by 2.8 percent to 36,240 compared to the same month year-on-year, while cargo throughput decreased by 2.5 percent to 422,000 tonnes.

In late March, passenger volume experienced strong growth, attributed to the Easter travel peak, as compared to 2017.

Hong Kong resident travel, which registered a year-on-year growth of 18 percent over March 2017, contributed the most to the passenger traffic growth, while passenger traffic to and from mainland China and Japan recorded the most significant increases.

While March imports recorded a 13 percent growth, the cargo throughput decline was mainly attributed to the 12 percent year-on-year exports drop. Among the key trading regions, South Korea and Europe registered the most significant drop during the month.

Over the first three months of the year, HKIA handled 18.3 million passengers and 1.15 million tonnes of cargo, representing year-on-year increases of 4.4 percent and 4.2 percent respectively.
