Italy Tourist Spending on the Up - WTTC

Tourists visiting Italy spent on average EUR39.6 billion during 2017, representing an increase of 6.5 percent, more than 50 percent higher than the world average growth rate of 4.3 percent, according to a new research released by World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC).

Overall, the total contribution of travel and tourism to the Italian economy was EUR223.2 billion throughout 2017, once all the direct, indirect and induced benefits were taken into account. This means that 13 percent of the entire Italian economy is dependent, either directly or indirectly, on tourism.

Travel and Tourism supported 3.4 million jobs, 14.7 percent of total Italian employment. WTTC also estimates that by 2028 almost four million jobs within the country are forecast to be dependent on this sector.

Gloria Guevara, CEO, WTTC, remarked, “I commend the Italian government and private sector for their management of the tourism economy, achieving growth more than 50 percent higher than the world average last year, which has enormous potential to create Italian jobs and to be part of the regeneration of the Italian economy.”
