UNWTO Deepens Tourism Cooperation with EU

With sustainable tourism increasingly growing across Europe, UNWTO and the European Parliament signed an agreement on February 28 to further enhance and improve the sector across the continent.

Addressing the European Parliament’s Tourism Task Force, Zurab Pololikashvili, secretary general, UNWTO, highlighted the need to enhance integration, connectivity and technology to maximise tourism’s role in creating jobs and stimulating growth across the EU.

“Over the next 10 years, tourism can create more than five million new jobs, not least because the number of tourists is set to double to more than two billion. Europe must not let this opportunity pass by,” outlined Antonio Tajani, president, European Parliament.

UNWTO and the EU Parliament pledged to work on promoting good practices and continue sharing knowledge and experiences on the ground. The agreement coincides with 2018 as the European Year of Cultural Heritage.
