When Migaloo was first sighted, it was thought that he was the only known all white whale in the world. As he migrates up the east coast of Australia from Antarctica to the warmer waters of Tropical North Queensland his distinctive all-white colouring allows people to report sightings and he has become a major tourist attraction.
With brown eyes and a white pigmented exterior, Migaloo is not hard to spot in a pod of humpback whales. Being so unique, Migaloo gets extra protection under Queensland and Commonwealth Government legislation. According to the government’s legislation, no vessel is allowed to get within 500 m of him.
